DRUG TESTING

What does Coastal MRO, Inc. do? Coastal Health Management Services, Inc. is a third party administrator (TPA) of employee screening services for companies nationwide. We are able to handle all of your employee screening needs including: complete drug testing programs, on-line supervisor and employee training seminars programs, drug-free workplace, alcohol, reasonable suspicion and safety policies as well as background checks.

Why should we drug test? Drug testing has been proven to save most companies time and money. This comes from reduced turnover, decreased absenteeism, less theft, fewer Workers’ Compensation claims, and increased productivity. In many states, your company may qualify to receive 5% discount (or more) on Workers’ Compensation premiums if you have a compliant Drug Free Workplace program.

I think drug testing is a good idea, but I'm concerned that I can't get enough people to hire that are Drug Free. What have you experienced? It is likely you will have fewer applicants, at least at the beginning of the program. As word gets around that your company is serious about hiring practices you will get a higher of quality employee prospects. All classified advertisements should include Notice of Drug Free Workplace.

Do I need to test all my employees after I implement a Drug Free Workplace Program? Some states require that you give a notice or grace period before testing any existing employee. However, you must begin testing all applicants upon the implementation of your Drug Free Workplace Program. If you think you may want to test all of your employees (after the notice or grace period), your Account Manager can provide several options.

What about people who are on prescription medications? Do I need to get that information from them? Absolutely not! It’s against the American’s with Disabilities Act and as an employer, by law you shouldn't know if an employee or job applicant is taking a prescription medication unless it effects the job safety of the employee or their co-workers. Also, one of the main duties of our certified Medical Review Officers is to determine what is legal drug usage (including over-the-counter medications) and what constitutes illegal drug usage.

How quickly will test results come back? You should receive a Negative test result within two (2) working days. However, for CMRO to provide a legally defensible drug screen, a test that shows positive on the initial screening will be sent for a confirmation test, which can take an additional 48 hours or more. If you are using our eScreen testing method you may get negative test results within minutes of the collection.

What do I do in case of an accident? It is important that you have a plan in place if one of your employees has an accident.  Your Account Manager can work with you to create a post accident plan that best meets your company’s needs.  CMRO also has staff available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for emergency situations.  Please call our toll free hotline at 1.800.533.8107. BACKGROUND CHECKS    Return to Top

What is the difference between the background checks found on the Internet and the background checks that CMRO does?  We are a full-service public records research provider. Internet searches only check databases that are available on a particular statewide network.  Those databases can be inaccurate and in fact, misleading. CMRO lets you enter and retrieve search requests on demand - securely and quickly - 24 hours a day. Our agents actually go to the courthouse sources for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

I like the idea of background checks. Does the employee have to sign a consent before I can begin the process of the background check? Yes! An employer may not perform any type of background check on an employee or perspective employee without a signed consent from that applicant/employee. Our job at CMRO is to make sure that you get accurate and legal background checks. Click here to view Fair Credit Reporting Act PDF File, Click Here to view Summary of FCRA

As an employer, can I be held accountable if I do not perform background checks? Yes. It is your responsibility to adequately screen all applicants.  Many employers are not aware of the liability associated with inadequate employment screening methods and as a result, employers increase their exposure to lawsuits.

What types of background checks do you recommend before I hire my next employee? CMRO recommends the following searches: Federal Criminal, Felony and Misdemeanor, Education Verification, Employment Verification, Social Security Verification, Driver’s License Verification and Drug Screening.

Will you select names for random testing?  Yes. Currently, there is no additional charge for this service. (If this information is on your computer simply export it to a text file and email it to us, we can import from almost any delimited text file.)

How do you select names for random testing? Think of your list of eligible employees as a deck of cards. We shuffle the "deck" using a random number generator and then pick one or more numbers at random. Each employee in your list is assigned a number at random, the list is then put in order by the random number assigned (i.e. the deck is shuffled.) One (or more is necessary) random numbers is then generated. The chosen employee(s) occupy the position(s) in the shuffle which our 2nd random number(s) has selected. The random number itself is generated using a random seed generator provided by Microsoft (c) and programmed using C++. If you would like more information on our technique please do not hesitate to ask.
